Inspired by the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ we made some sandwiches today… although we didn’t make mustard ones like the story! We worked with a partner, helped each other and talked through the process as we went. We especially enjoyed eating the sandwiches after. 😃 Later in the week we will be writing instructions on how to make a jam sandwich now that we are experts!
We have started our new topic on ‘The Seashore’, and have been reading the story of ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’ this week. In the story, Mr Grinling rows over every day in a little boat to work at the lighthouse. We had fun this morning making our own origami boats. We were able to carefully follow instructions to make them, and then tested them out in water and counted how many pirate coins our boats could hold. It was impressive to see some of our origami experts supporting their peers and sharing their skills.
Today we were given the challenge of working in teams to create the tallest tower we could….with limited resources! We had 5 minutes to plan our design then 20 minutes to build it. We had only 15 paper art straws and 10 sheets of scrap paper and some tape. We did a fantastic job and we showed great team work skills – listening to each other, helping and sharing our ideas.
P2 have been learning about Victorian toys. We wanted to find out what toys were made of and what type of things children played with. We learned that most toys were made of wood, metal or fabric, that children had far less toys than we do today, and that many of them were homemade. We had a go this week at making paper optical illusion toys and our own wooden peg dolls. It was lots of fun!
We are continuing to learn about measure. This week we talked about length and height. We learned to make comparisons and talk about taller/longer and shorter. We estimated and measured using non-standard units such as cubes, cones and our feet and hands. Then we learned about cm and metres and showed that we could accurately measure items.
This week P2 had their opportunity to take part in a long standing Sciennes tradition – The Victorian School Tour. Our lovely Janitor Mr Reid led pupils round the school, allowing access to areas normally out of bounds to the children. The children saw original Victorian features such as the boiler room, the pool plant room, the swimming pool and the attic. We also looked at external features of the building such as where the fence that separated boys and girls was and the separate entrance doors. The pupils really enjoyed the experience – thank you Mr Reid!
This week in P2 we had lots of fun learning about measure. Each class is starting with a different aspect; length, mass or capacity/volume. We are learning to use mathematical language to compare items we are measuring, make logical estimations and measure items using both non-standard units (eg. Cubes, hands, feet etc) and standard measuring tools. We have shown the ability to explore, test our predictions and work collaboratively.
As part of our street topic, we have been learning about the local businesses in our community. We focussed on a cafe; we talked about the different job roles, what things were needed in a cafe and today made our own yummy treats for our class cafe. Lots of creativity and sharing ideas which was lovely to see. Luckily they look too good to eat!
